German Railway 1 (ICE4)

The aim of the study was to evaluate the proposed passenger coach design for the new ICx trains of DB-AG with regard to the possibilities for luggage accommodation, the achievable passenger exchange time and the theoretically achievable degree of capacity utilisation.

Client: Deutsche Bahn AG; Sub for: TU Vienna, Research Center for Railway Engineering

Duration: 2012

Project description: Proposed passenger coach designs for the new ICx trains (now ICE4) of DB-AG were evaluated with regard to the possibilities for luggage accommodation, the achievable passenger exchange time and the theoretically achievable degree of capacity utilization. Based on the evaluation results, redesign proposals were developed in 10 variants for the respective vehicle types with the aim of significantly reducing the required passenger exchange time, increasing the availability of seats and at the same time reducing customer comfort and safety risks due to non-stowable luggage.
